Rutopía was founded in 2017 by Sebastián Muñoz and Emiliano Iturriaga after working closely with indigenous and rural communities across Mexico and asking a simple but powerful question: how can tourism create dignified livelihoods while protecting biodiversity and culture? The answer was impact tourism—regenerative, community-based, and rooted in local knowledge. Rutopía was born as a social enterprise with the mission to regenerate nature and culture through travel. Since then, it has been recognized internationally, winning the Hult Prize in Social Entrepreneurship (awarded by the United Nations), becoming the first B Corp–certified tourism company in Mexico, and receiving accolades from Forbes Mexico, CNET, and the Iberoamerican Award for Social and Sustainable Tourism.
