Blue Sky Symposium 2013 (all-day) @ Westin Diplomat Resort & SpaJul 24
The Blue Sky Symposium 2013, a project of ASTA’s Young Professional Society, is being held in conjunction with Travel Weekly’s Global Travel Marketplace. The boutique events are both in their inaugural year, with the number of attendees limited to 100 for each event. The Blue Sky Symposium will be a one-day event held July 24th at the Westin Dipolomat in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Think Tank Style
The Blue Sky Symposium is set up a little differently than the typical travel industry events I list on this calendar. There is no trade show. There are no keynotes or educational tracks. Per their site, it’s aimed at being a forum where the brightest minds in travel discuss issues facing our industry and look for ways to solve them.
Every year there is a theme and this year is – as you probably deduced from the image – The Future Travel Agent Workforce. This will be a great event for those looking for more intellectually challenging discussions on our industry and are looking to network at a high level.
Blue Sky Symposium Agenda
Those, like myself, with short attention spans will appreciate the quick talks in the morning. Think TED-style talks. Five speakers giving 20 minute presentations. The afternoon will be moderated round table discussions going over industry issues and the future of the retail travel landscape.
Side note: We will be giving one of the TED-style presentations, hope to see you there!
Registration Information
For those interested in attending, best not to wait. There are only 100 spots – 60% of which are reserved for the travel agent community, 40% for suppliers and industry thought leaders.
Cost to participate is $79 for ASTA Young Professional members, $99 for ASTA members, $129 for non-ASTA members. >>Register Now
Hotel Details
The event will be held at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale. There are no room blocks available at this time but that may change. Agents are encouraged to check the Blue Sky Symposium’s travel page for the most updated information.

Global Travel Marketplace (GTM) 2013 (all-day) @ Westin Diplomat Resort & SpaJul 24 – Jul 26
Travel Weekly’s inaugural Global Travel Marketplace (GTM) 2013 will be held July 24-26th at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Unlike Travel Weekly’s CruiseWorld, Global Travel Marketplace is an appointment-only event with spots for only 100 agents.
Held in conjunction with Travel Weekly’s Global Travel Marketplace is the Blue Sky Symposium, a think-tank style event for the travel industry.
Registration Info
To apply for one of the 100 attendee slots, travel agents must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum $1 million in individual sales

- Based in the US or Canada
- Be able to provide 3 industry references
- Have a global book of business
- Desire to connect with new vendors and destinations
If that’s you, fill out the registration form and you’ll be alerted to the status of your application within 2 weeks. Since there are only 100 positions available, the earlier you register, the better!
What’s Included (Everything)
A unique feature of Global Travel Marketplace is that the agent is entirely hosted. What does that mean? It means that accepted applicants don’t have to pay a cent for their airfare, 3-nights hotel, meals, transportation, or any event associated with the Global Travel Marketplace – it’s on the house.
Global Travel Marketplace Agenda
While there is no formal trade show, the event includes in-depth “boardroom” presentations and two full days of pre-scheduled supplier meetings. If you’re wondering who’s in attendance, check out their supplier attendee list.
There will also be plenty of networking opportunities available to attendees.

ASTA Global Convention 2013 (all-day) @ Hyatt Regency HotelSep 17 – Sep 19
The inaugural ASTA Global Convention 2013 will be held September 17-19th in Miami, FL.
ASTA’s annual event, previously branded as THE TRADESHOW, received an overhaul this year by ASTA’s new CEO Zane Kerby – the former Senior Vice President, Events, Sponsorships and Advertising at GBTA, where he oversaw the very successful GBTA convention.

Registration Info
As of now, the ASTA Global Convention website doesn’t list the registration fees until a few steps into the registration process. To save you some unnecessary digging around, here are the registration fees:

There is a discounted dual registration rate of $399 for agents attending the ASTA Global Convention and NACTA’s Annual Convention (held immediately after in Fort Lauderdale). Otherwise, pricing starts at $329 with the option to add on events such as the Advocacy Dinner, ASTA’s Hispanic Caucus, and ASTA’s Premium Meeting (for ASTA Premium members only).
PS – I’m not sure why there is no pricing listed for ASTA members at this time. I’ve dropped ASTA a tweet and will update when I hear back.
Agenda for ASTA Global Convention 2013
Monday: Not officially listed in the dates but Monday the 16th involves a golf tournament from 12-6pm for you hob-knobbers and golf enthusiasts. I’m a tennis girl myself. I’ll be lobbying for a tennis tournament option for any future conventions.
Tuesday: Home to the add-on meetings above, with the majority of attendees getting in that night for the Opening Event at Bayside Marketplace, an outdoor shopping mall in downtown Miami.Wednesday and Thursday: These are the days where the education and trade show component of the ASTA Global Convention come into play. Come Wednesday evening, the Advocacy Dinner steals the show. Save Thursday afternoon for complimentary 1/2 day tours of the area.
Friday: Complimentary full day tours around Miami! FAM trip anyone?
For more details, rumor has it Hilary Clinton may be the keynote, view the full agenda.
